A Teleut Shaman and her DrumThe surface of her shaman drum is divided into two worlds, the Upper World and the Lower World. A wavy line (i.e., the Sacred Path) separates the worlds and is also a border around the Upper World. In the Upper World are the Sun and planets or stars. There are also horses, riders, birds, and trees. In the Lower World are a man, a fish, and a turtle. These figures, taken together, tell the shaman's story. |
