Bear, Buffalo, Elk, Horse and Moose Drums and Rattles

Steven Kauder

I have retired after 20 years of satisfying drum making.
I am still making drums that interest me. Any that
are available can be found by clicking here.

Rawhide Rattle Kits

My first rattle was a great experiment. I had no instructions, just a rattle I had purchased and the stories I had heard. I also had a very nice piece of moose rawhide left over from making my first drum.

The long and short of it is that I did make a great rattle, and I have made hundreds of rattles since. You can make your own wonderful rattle, too.

Kit included hide pieces for the rattle head, stick for handle,
leather to wrap handle, artificial sinew, corn, tapestry
sewing needle, and step-by-step instructions.

You supplied sand, funnel, glue, string, rubber
band, and a razor tool or sharp scissors.

Buffalo Rattle Made from Kit with Additional Materials

A talented artist made this rattle from one of my kits.
(The artist supplied the turquoise stone and the
leather strips around the rattle neck.)

Special Fillings (at additional cost)
Quartz Crystals*
Anthill Stones**

*Quartz Crystals are a traditional rattle filling in some societies. Quartz Crystal Rattles have a sharper, stronger sound. I imported these single and double terminated quartz crystals from several countries.

**Anthill Stones are also a traditional rattle filling. Anthill Stone Rattles have a softer, gentler sound. I collected these stones from abandoned ant nests at the Posi ruins at Ojo Caliente, New Mexico.
