In addition to rawhide rattles, there are Gourd Rattles, which are traditional in some South American societies.
I made these rattles from gourds grown near my home in Kansas.
I selected heads with a canteen shape and filled them with different types of wooden beads to obtain the fullest sound.
These rattles were custom made, which took up to 4 weeks. |

the rattle heads were up to 12 inches (30 cm) wide. Compared to rawhide rattles, gourd rattles are much larger and weigh much less. |
