Shaman Gourd Rattles

In addition to rawhide rattles, there are Gourd Rattles, which are traditional in some South American societies. I made these rattles from gourds grown near my home in the rural Midwest. I selected heads with a canteen shape and filled them with different types of wooden beads to obtain the fullest sound.

These rattles were custom made, which took up to 4 weeks.

These rattles were large, up to 28 inches (71 cm) tall, and
the rattle heads were up to 12 inches (30 cm) wide.

Compared to rawhide rattles, gourd rattles are
much larger and weigh much less.
