A Teleut Shaman and her Drum

Here is a picture of a Teleut Shaman and her drum; this was taken in the 1930s in the Teleut region of Altai, Russia.

Her drum is oval, warped, amazing, and far from perfectly shaped.

The surface of her shaman drum is divided into two worlds, the Upper World and the Lower World. A wavy line (i.e., the Sacred Path) separates the worlds and is also a border around the Upper World. In the Upper World are the Sun and planets or stars. There are also horses, riders, birds, and trees. In the Lower World are a man, a fish, and a turtle. These figures, taken together, tell the shaman's story.
