Shaman Books

There are a great number of shamanic books in the marketplace. Some speak to your soul and your heart, while others are academic and intellectual. Which ones are worth your time and energy?

If you wish to learn about shamanism and learn about healing techniques and ceremony, then I recommend the books below. They cover many shamanic techniques, and they include many personal stories from the authors.

Recommended Reading
Soul Retrieval: Mending the Fragmented Self by Sandra Ingerman

This is the book that changed my life. When I read it, I saw a new and wonderful and different value system that explained the balance between ordinary life and the hidden compassionate spirits always around us. I was thunderstruck and immediately read this cover to cover. I got everything I could read about shamans. I went to a shamanic workshop with Sandra, and my life changed in many ways.
The Way of the Shaman by Michael Harner

Michael Harner, PhD., is the granddaddy of the shamanism rebirth in western society. He is the anthropologist who went beyond the academic study of shamanic cultures and became a shaman himself. This book has many wonderful stories and shamanic techniques for you to learn.
Riding Windhorses: A Journey into the Heart of Mongolian Shamanism by Sarangerel

This is a book by a woman who became a Mongolian and Siberian shaman. It is full of ritual and ceremonies. It is a personal account and well worth reading and study.
Plant Spirit Medicine: The Healing Power of Plants by Eliot Cowan

This book explains how to connect with the spirits of the plants we use for healing; it melds the physical use of the plants with their spiritual usage. It integrates shamanism, plants, and healing techniques.
Fools Crow: Wisdom and Power by Thomas E. Mails

This is another book I loved reading. Fools Crow led a holy life, and this book immerses you in that as much as any book can. Fools Crow was a great healer. Many of his ceremonies and rituals are described.
The Shaman: Voyages of the Soul
Trance, Ecstasy and Healing from Siberia to the Amazon
by Piers Vitebsky

This is a marvelously illustrated book. It presents a great overview of shamanic practices around the world. An excellent introduction to the worldwide scope of shamanism.
