Old Bear Dog and his Drum

Here is a picture of Old Bear Dog, son of Sioux Chief Iron Shell, and it includes his rawhide drum. This picture is about 100 years old.

Note that this drum is far from perfectly round and is also warped. Old Bear Dog's left hand is behind the drum, which indicates this is a single-headed drum. (That is, the drum has a drumskin on one side and a handle on the other side -- the kind of drum I make.)

Old Bear Dog's drum beater is in his right hand. The drum beater is a long, thin stick with a long and narrow head. It has a cloth tie below the drum beater head.
