SHAMANIC ART: Ceremonial Drums and Rattles

Powwow Drums

I love powwow drums. Their tone is deep and powerful, and you feel it through your entire body. In the open, the drum can be heard a mile away.
It takes a very long time, up to a year, to complete a powwow drum. I have to find a down cottonwood tree and get permission to cut it. Once the log is cut, I partially hollow it out and let it dry naturally for many months. Next, I complete hollowing the log. Then I select a hide for the drum -- it takes an entire hide. Finally, a single strand of lacing, 80 or more feet long, is cut from the same hide, and the drum is completed with ceremony.
