Sparking/Glowing Rattles

These are translucent rawhide rattles filled with quartz crystals that produce brief flashes of light in a dark environment. This is a traditional effect that I have been able to reproduce utilizing hand-picked rawhide along with small quartz crystals with points.

It takes hard shaking to produce the glow, and sometimes it takes a while for the crystals to warm up before they flash. Terms for this magical effect include mechanoluminescence and piezoelectric.

From New York: I tried the lightning rattle out two nights ago and was blown away by it. I've never had a rattle so 'alive' in my
hands; once the stones were warmed up, the rattle easily produced beautiful flashes of white light that illuminated
the entire rattle head, while producing a deep and lovely rattle sound. It is simply magical.

From North Carolina: ...a gift for my mother, who heard about the Uncompahgre Ute rattle, and then had me
stand in her closet with her as she shook some crystals in a container to show me the glow. It
was rather magical, and she did have to vigorously shake for a while...
