SHAMANIC ART: Ceremonial Drums and Rattles

Shaman Drum Beaters

I have made many, many drum beaters over the years. What has the best sound and appearance? I prefer natural fur or artificial fur beater heads.

My standard drum beaters produce as nice a sound as any of the natural or artificial fur ones. The difference is the look and feel of the natural and artificial fur beaters. Larger beater heads, from natural or artificial bear or wolf, look like "dust mops in action" as you drum. The smaller beater heads, from artificial seal or artificial spotted jaguar, feel luxuriously soft as you hold them.

Beater Heads are cotton filled and covered with natural fur or artificial fur for the best possible sound and appearance.
Beater Handles are made from mulberry, oak, osage orange, pecan, or walnut branches.
The handles are wrapped with Buffalo, Caribou, Deer, Elk, or Moose leather.

Beater Fur and Fabric Descriptions:
Natural Bear: Long natural fur, the soft feel you only get from natural fur, looks like a "dust mop."
Natural Wolf: Long natural fur, the soft feel you only get from natural fur, an amazing feeling.
Artificial Bear: Long fabric, glossy appearance, very large beater heads, pleasant feel.
Artificial Wolf: Long fabric, wildly attractive, has been called the "Tina Turner."
Artificial Seal: Short fabric, soft, glossy look, very pleasant feel.
Artificial Spotted Jaguar: Short fabric, the softest artificial fur, subtle colors and spots.
Standard Beater: Short fabric, nice to the touch.
